  • John Sutherland-Developmental Program Instructor

    Experience:
    Coach Sutherland spent 9 years as the head women's basketball coach at the University of Arkansas. He left as the winningest coach in Razorback's history. John was also the head women's coach at New Mexico State University for 5 years, spent 3 years as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, and several years on the bench for the Marshall University Thundering Herd. John brings decades of experience in teaching the game of basketball.

    Personal Fact:
    Coach Sutherland says, "I'm married to God's perfect choice for me, Suzanne Sutherland, and we have three wonderful boys."

    Why I love to coach:
    "There is nothing more gratifying than teaching young people, especially the game of basketball. Seeing them grow in their skills is priceless. There's no doubt Upward not only benefits the kids young in their Christian walk but also the families who are looking for the "real deal" in basketball and in a church family."

  • Wayne Richardson-Travel Team Coach

    Sport: Basketball

    Proverbs 22: 6 "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." (ESV)

    Experience:
    Coach Richardson has a wealth of experience coaching basketball at both the middle school and high school levels. With over a decade as a head coach, Coach Richardson is known for teaching the game of basketball with passion and maximizing the talent and potential of young basketball players. Coach Richardson guided the 2001 Hannan Wildcats to the final four of the WV State Basketball Tournament with a team consisting of only 7 players coined by the media as the "Magnificent 7!" As a high school basketball player he was a 1000 point scorer at Hannan High School and is still the 2nd leading scorer in Hannan history. Coach Richardson was a 3 year starter and a 2nd Team-All State selection as a senior. Richardson recently worked as an asst. coach at Teays Valley Christian Prep.

    Personal Fact:
    Married to Robin Richardson for 35 years with 2 adult children, Mindy and Mitch.

    Why I love to coach:
    "To see kids grow, learn, and mature in a team concept as well as develop leadership and accountability. I love the fun and excitement in players when they see what can be accomplished with hard work and dedication. It's not just about teaching the X's and O's but helping players be better people!"

  • Lance Herbert-Travel Team Coach

    Sport: Basketball

    Proverbs 2:6 "For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding." (NET)

    Experience:
    Coach Herbert began coaching at the middle school level in a city-wide church league while attending college. After starting a family, Coach Herbert moved through local instructional and recreational leagues before moving on to the AAU circuit. Coach Herbert guided his teams to three WV state AAU titles in five seasons. He had the privilege of seeing many of his players move on to play high school basketball and a few offered college scholarships. Herbert recently served as the head boys coach at Covenant High School for the 2016-17 season.

    Married to Victoria Herbert for 21 years with 4 children, Mason, Hannah, Sophia, and McCaffrey

    Why I love to coach:
    "Teaching kids that if they are willing to listen, learn, and work at it, they can grow and make themselves better. Basketball is just the example, the same approach can be applied to anything."

  • Paul Massie-Travel Team Coach

    Experience:
    Coach Massie grew up in Oak Hill, WV playing basketball at Oak Hill High School for two years (1979 & 1980) under the legendary Coach Jim Lilly (over 700 wins.) Coach Massie has directed and coached for 13 years in the Upward Sports recreation league at South Charleston Church of the Nazarene and has been around the local travel tournaments and leagues in the Charleston area for several years. He is currently the assistant boys varsity coach for Covenant School in Huntington, WV and continues to direct the Upward of South Charleston recreational league. He has had the privilege of seeing several of his Upward recreational league players go on to participate on their middle and high school teams in his 13 years of recreational coaching.

    Married to Terri for 26 years with 3 children, Sutton, Torre, and Isaac.

    "I love to coach young men because I want to make a positive difference in their lives both on and off the court, men of integrity, and positive role models for their schools and community. "

  • Charlie Hagley-Travel Team Coach

    Sport: Basketball

    Matthew 6:33- "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." (ESV)

    Experience:
    Charlie was an assistant basketball coach for the Marshall University men's basketball team. He also coached at the middle school and high school boys and girls level. Charlie has been an instructor for many basketball camps across the country including UCLA, The Morgan Wootten Basketball Camp, and his own camp, The Hoop-N-Hustle Basketball Camp. Charlie was an All-state high school basketball player and four year starter. He has a passion to see young players receive a high level of instruction in a positive environment.

    Personal Fact:
    Married to Jamie Alexander Hagley with four children: Grace, Calia, Isaiah, and Xander.

    Why I love to coach:
    "I love to invest in young people using the game of basketball. Basketball mirrors life teaching valuable lessons such as hard work, discipline, working with others for a common goal, overcoming adversity, handling success and failure, respect, authority, integrity, accountability, as well as love, relationships, and friendships. Billy Graham says, 'A coach will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a lifetime!' I take seriously that responsibility and I am honored to be a part of molding young athletes into leaders and having the opportunity to invest into them eternally."

  • Eric Hutchinson-Travel Team Coach

    Sport: Basketball

    Favorite Verse:
    Proverbs 3:5-6 - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths." (ESV)

    Experience:
    Eric grew up in South Point, Ohio and has spent the past 16 years serving in various children's ministry roles in the local church. He has traveled across the United States and western Africa, speaking to thousands of children about reaching their potential through serving Jesus Christ. Eric has also spoken to children's ministry leaders throughout the eastern U.S., leading numerous conferences and seminars, teaching them how to better reach kids with the Gospel. In 2013, he began coaching girls basketball as an assistant coach at Covenant School in Huntington, WV and was named Head Coach of the girls program prior to the 2015-2016 season.

    Personal Fact:
    Married to Beth Toppins for 16 years with four children: Emily (13), Benjamin (10), Sarah (9) and Ella (2).

    Why I love to coach:
    "I've spent most of my adult life trying my best to teach Biblical principles to young people and point them to Jesus throughout my children's ministry. Basketball is a great vehicle to do just that. There are so many parallels to the Bible that you can use basketball to point young people to; Hard work, selflessness, overcoming obstacles, perseverance, trust and much more! The game of basketball is full of life lessons that can be used to lead young men and women to the ultimate prize....a personal relationship with Jesus Christ."

  • Ronnie Smith-Travel Team Coach

    Isaiah 40:31- “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint." (NIV)

    Experience:
    A graduate of Kentucky Christian University; nationally recognized for it’s' development of servant leaders and prestigious girls basketball program. Ronnie was a 4 year collegiate athlete, team captain, and co president of the fellowship of Christian athletes club. A former All-State and All-Conference high school track and football player he became part of the first ever football recruiting class in KCU school history. Using his combined leadership and athletic experience Ronnie has continuously served as a basketball coach for the youth in his community.

    Married to Katie Lynn Smith with three children: Jayda, Alysia, and Mariah.

    Why I love to coach:
    "I love to coach because it allows for a platform to impact the lives of people. A coach is an educator of not only the sport but life; teaching how to overcome struggle and humbly accept triumph. I always focus on developing the athlete’s athletic skills and character for everyday life. "
